Fable 5 Lasted 3 Days Before the US Government Pulled the Plug

I'd been eating well for two days. Fable 5 gave me that same jolt I hadn't felt since the 4.6 era. Then this morning, it was gone.

I woke up to a 502

This morning I opened SwiftBar and saw both my accounts had refreshed their quota. I figured it was fallout from the OpenAI acquisition news, and thought — great, I get to abuse Fable for another day. Then Claude Code threw a flat 502.My first guess was that sub2api or my proxy had died. I poked around, found nothing wrong, opened the OAuth client — turns out it just got pulled.

What actually happened

So I read the official statement. It really was a hard cutoff.On June 12, the US government — citing national security — dropped an export-control directive ordering a halt to all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national. Note that: any foreign national, whether or not they're inside the US, including Anthropic's own foreign-national employees. To stay compliant, Anthropic had no choice but to disable both models for everyone.

The reason is the wild part

What the government is worried about is a "jailbreak" — getting Fable 5 to read through an entire codebase and then automatically find and patch the security holes in it. Translation: it writes offensive-security code so well that it got classified as a national security risk.So a model that helps you fix bugs got shut down for being too good at fixing bugs.

Anthropic isn't buying it, but complied anyway

Anthropic pushed back: it argues this is a narrow, non-universal jailbreak, that the same capability has been available in other models for ages, and that recalling a model serving hundreds of millions of people over this makes no sense — by that logic, nearly every frontier lab would have to stop shipping new models entirely. It added that it's working to restore access as fast as possible.

What it means for you

Good news: this only hit Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Every other Claude — Opus 4.8, Sonnet, Haiku — is untouched, so you can just switch over and keep going. 到底发生了什么

翻了下官方声明，是真被官方一刀切了。6 月 12 日美国政府以国家安全的名义甩了一道出口管制令，要求停掉任何外国国民对 Fable 5 和 Mythos 5 的访问——注意是任何外国国民，人在不在美国都算，连 Anthropic 自己的外籍员工也一起断。Anthropic 为了合规没得选，只能对所有人把这俩模型关了。

最离谱的是理由

政府担心的点，是有人把 Fable 5 拿去"越狱"——让它通读一整个代码库，自动找出再顺手把里面的安全漏洞修了。翻译一下就是：它写攻防代码写得太猛，猛到被当成了国家安全风险。合着一个能帮你修 bug 的模型，因为太能修 bug 被关了。

Anthropic 不服，但照办

Anthropic 自己也不服，但还是照办了。它的说法是这只是个很窄、又不通用的越狱，同样的能力别家模型早就有，为这点事召回一个服务了几亿人的模型根本不讲道理——照这逻辑，所有前沿厂商都别发新模型了。最后补了句，正在尽快想办法恢复。
